Wind energy is generated from wind, a fundamental natural phenomenon we all know about. Humans have been utilizing wind for a long time, for activities such as sailing boats, spinning windmills, and even simple things like drying clothes.
Generating alternative energy from wind power is now one of the very important renewable energy, especially in creating energy sustainability. It helps reduce the dependence on conventional energy sources because wind power energy occurs naturally, constantly regenerates, and never runs out.
Today we can generate electricity from wind energy using wind turbines.
The kinetic energy from the wind motion is transformed into mechanical energy with the help of wind turbines to drive the electrical generator.
There are two types of wind turbines:
The efficiency of wind turbines to generate electricity effectively lies in the assessment of the environment that provides a consistent wind speed. However, the suitable wind power may vary depending on the design and characteristics of wind turbines. In the appropriate environment, the electricity generation can be optimized by using proper wind power to propel multiple wind turbines simultaneously in the same location, called wind farms.
A wind farm or wind park is an area where wind turbines are installed to generate electricity in the same area to make the most of the wind forces in the region. The electrical mechanism is set to connect each wind turbine to an electricity management system and store electricity for further use. The areas of wind farms or wind parks can also be utilized for other purposes besides electricity production and management. For example, the space between turbines can be used for farming or being a tourist attraction, which can add value for neighboring communities. The wind parks that are popular tourist attractions are Khao Kho Wind Farm in Phetchabun Province, Laem Chabang Port Wind Farm in Chonburi Province, Koh Larn Wind Farm in Chonburi Province, etc.
Today, Sermsang Power Corporation is committed to promoting energy security and looking for alternative energy sources for society. We recognize the importance of wind energy, which is renewable energy with high efficiency and contribute to environmental sustainability. Therefore, we have jointly invested in the Romklao Wind Power Plant Project of Romklao Sub-district, Nikhom Kham Soi District, Mukdahan Province. It is a wind farm of 140-150 meters horizontal axis wind turbines using the technology of Vestas, the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturer from Denmark. The total capacity is 45.0 MW with the average wind speed of 6.6 m/s.
In addition, Sermsang Power has invested in and developed Tra Vinh Nearshore Wind Farm Project in Vietnam through Truong Thanh Tra Vinh Wind Power Joint Stock Company (TTTV). Wind turbines of Goldwind, the top Chinese wind turbine supplier, have a height of 100 meters with a total capacity of 48 MW and the average wind speed of 6.9 m/s. SSP continues to look for various opportunities to invest in wind energy, one of the world’s major renewable energy sources.
